GRLCLB

GRLCLB: because having a voice is a luxury - and not using it is unthinkable.

we live in a world of distractions. whether it's our phone, netflix, or who's had their lips/boobs/bum done, we are so absorbed by the superficial 'issues' we face (the wifi won't connect, bae didn't like my latest selfie, MAC was sold out of my favourite lipstick) that it's become so easy to just switch off the anger & concern we should be feeling about the world we live in.

being angry about things is an effort. it's time-consuming. it's like mastering contouring but without the reward of having a seriously improved instagram feed at the end of it. caring about things that matter isn't particularly rewarding - especially when you're fighting a world in which discrimination, ignorance, and pure unadulterated, unprovoked hatred reign supreme - but it is necessary.

women in saudi arabia have been given the right to vote for the first time. female genital mutilation is being slowly banned in africa. gay marriage is now legal in 22 countries around the world.

but women in saudi arabia cannot open a bank account without their husbands' permission, cannot try on clothes while shopping, cannot drive a car. the world health organisation estimates that as many as 140 million women have been subjected to FGM - mutilated with knives, razor blades, broken glass. gay marriage is still illegal in 174 countries.

we live in a world in which a human being decides that risking their life getting piled into an unseaworthy boat is a better alternative to staying in the country that is their home - and yet is still treated like freeloading vermin.

3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day. 1.3 billion live on less than $1.25 a day. 22,000 children die every day from poverty. america hates everyone who isn't white. the patriarchy's still a thing. some people still don't believe in evolution. still don't understand gender & sexuality. still don't try to.

our generation is one which is waking up. growing increasingly disillusioned with a rotting world. unwilling to tolerate intolerance. realising their power.

GRLCLB is not just for girls. GRLCLB is not exclusive. GRLCLB is not a clique.

GRLCLB is for girls, boys, and everything in-between. GRLCLB is for the people who don't belong anywhere else. GLRCLB is for the ones who get it. GRLCLB might change the world - because, ultimately, that's what you want. every time you bemoan the way things are, you are screaming for change. every time you tweet about the injustice of our world, you are demanding change. ...and every time you get called a lesbian for being a feminist, or gay for supporting gay rights, or a terrorist for defending islam, you realise how terrified the world is of change.

we have a long way to go. we have a hard fight ahead of us. shall we do this together?
